APS Certificate for Germany: Who Needs It, What It Costs and How Long It Takes

By Counselling Desk · 6 min read · Updated 2026-07-28

The APS is a document verification step for Indian applicants. Getting the timing wrong here delays everything downstream.

Why it exists

The Akademische Prüfstelle verifies that your academic documents are genuine and that your qualification is comparable to German standards. It is a verification service, not an admission decision — a positive APS certificate does not guarantee a university place.

What you submit

The core set is straightforward, but incomplete files are the main cause of delay:

  • Class 10 and 12 certificates
  • Bachelor's transcripts for all semesters and the degree certificate
  • Passport copy
  • Language test results if available
  • Payment of the processing fee

Timing

Plan four to six weeks, and longer during peak season. Many universities now ask for the APS number at application stage, so submitting your APS after applying to universities is the wrong order. Begin as soon as you have your final Bachelor's transcripts.

Figures in this guide are indicative and were checked on 2026-07-28. Fees, visa rules and financial-proof amounts change; confirm the current numbers with the university and the relevant embassy or immigration authority before you act.
