The German student visa is rule-based rather than discretionary. Most problems come from timing and document mismatches, not from the interview.
Start with the APS, not the visa
Indian applicants need their academic documents verified by the APS office in New Delhi. This is not optional and it is not fast โ allow four to six weeks. Students who begin the APS after receiving admission usually end up deferring an intake, so treat it as the first step of your entire plan rather than a visa formality.
The document set
What the mission expects is fairly stable:
- Admission letter from a recognised German institution
- APS certificate
- Blocked account confirmation for the current required amount
- Proof of health insurance covering the period until enrolment
- Academic transcripts, degree certificates and language test results
- Motivation letter and CV
- Valid passport and completed VIDEX application
What causes problems
In our experience the failures cluster around four things: a blocked account funded below the required amount, a motivation letter that does not connect the previous degree to the chosen programme, appointment slots booked too late in the season, and insurance that does not cover the gap between arrival and enrolment.
None of these are subjective judgements. They are checkable before you submit, which is why the German process rewards preparation more than persuasion.
Timeline that works
For an October intake, a comfortable plan looks like this: APS by January, applications by March, admission by May, blocked account and insurance in June, visa appointment in June or July. If you are compressing this into eight weeks, expect to miss the intake.
