Question 1

Which European country is cheapest for Indian students?

Accepted Answer

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have the lowest combined tuition, rent and proof-of-funds requirements. Italy can be equally cheap once the ISEE income assessment is applied, and Germany has no tuition but the highest upfront cash requirement.

Question 2

Do I need to know the local language to study in Europe?

Accepted Answer

Not for admission to an English-taught programme. You do need the local language for most part-time jobs and for daily life in Germany, France and Italy. Aim for A2 before you travel and B1 during the first year.

Question 3

How much money do I need in total for the first year?

Accepted Answer

As a planning figure: €14,000–€15,000 for Germany including the blocked account, €10,000–€12,000 for France or Italy, and €8,000–€10,000 for Poland or the Baltics. These are estimates, not official figures.

Question 4

Can I apply with a three-year Bachelor's degree?

Accepted Answer

Often yes in France, Italy, Poland and Spain. In Germany it depends on subject match and credits; many universities accept it, some require four years. Always check the specific programme regulations.

Question 5

Can I study in Europe after a study gap?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Gaps of one to three years are usually accepted if you can explain them with work, a certification or family reasons. Explain the gap directly in your SOP rather than leaving it unaddressed.

Question 6

Is IELTS mandatory for European universities?

Accepted Answer

No, but it is the safest route. Several universities accept a medium-of-instruction letter, their own test or Duolingo. Confirm that the visa office also accepts the waiver before skipping the test.

Question 7

What IELTS score do I need for a Master's in Europe?

Accepted Answer

6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 covers the majority of English-taught Master's programmes. Some universities accept 6.0, and a few competitive programmes ask for 7.0.

Question 8

How many backlogs are acceptable?

Accepted Answer

There is no published limit. In practice, a few cleared backlogs with an otherwise strong record are manageable, while many uncleared ones will weaken the application significantly, particularly in Germany.

Question 9

What is a blocked account and how much is required?

Accepted Answer

It is a German bank account holding your own money, released monthly, used as proof of funds. The current requirement is €11,904 for twelve months, with €992 released each month.

Question 10

What is the APS certificate?

Accepted Answer

A verification of your academic documents, mandatory for Indian applicants to Germany. It takes four to six weeks and is increasingly required at application stage, not just for the visa.

Question 11

How long does a German student visa take?

Accepted Answer

Typically four to twelve weeks after the appointment, depending on the mission and the season. Apply as soon as you have your admission letter and blocked account confirmation.

Question 12

How much financial proof does France require?

Accepted Answer

Around €7,380 for the year, roughly €615 a month. This is substantially lower than Germany's requirement, which is one reason France suits students with limited liquid funds.

Question 13

What is the ISEE and why does it matter in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The ISEE is an income and asset indicator. Italian public universities scale tuition to it, so a lower bracket can reduce fees from around €4,000 to a few hundred euros a year. It requires an ISEE parificato prepared from legalised Indian income documents.

Question 14

Can I work while studying in Europe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with limits that vary: 140 full days a year in Germany, 964 hours a year in France, 20 hours a week in Italy and Spain, and no formal cap for full-time students in Poland.

Question 15

Will part-time work cover my living costs?

Accepted Answer

It can cover food, transport and part of your rent once you are settled. It will not cover your first semester, and no visa office accepts it as proof of funds.

Question 16

What happens after I graduate?

Accepted Answer

Most European countries give a job-search permit: 18 months in Germany, 12 in France, Italy, Spain and Austria, 24 in Ireland and Finland, and up to three years via Denmark's establishment card.

Question 17

Which countries have the best post-study work options?

Accepted Answer

Finland and Ireland offer two years, Denmark up to three via the establishment card, and Germany 18 months with a large employer base. Compare the permit length together with the size of the job market.

Question 18

Can my parents fund my studies without a loan?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if the funds are in a family account with a clear paper trail. Visa offices look for source of funds and stability, not just the balance. Large last-minute deposits invite questions.

Question 19

Do European universities accept education loans as proof of funds?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes, provided the sanction letter is from a recognised bank and the amount meets the requirement. In Germany the loan money still has to move into a blocked account.

Question 20

How early should I start the application process?

Accepted Answer

Twelve months before your intake. For an October intake in Germany: APS by January, applications by March, visa appointment by July.

Question 21

How many universities should I apply to?

Accepted Answer

Six to eight, split between two or three ambitious choices, three realistic ones and two safe ones. More than ten usually means weaker, generic applications.

Question 22

What documents do I need for a university application?

Accepted Answer

Transcripts and degree certificate, class 10 and 12 certificates, language test results, CV, SOP, letters of recommendation, passport copy and, for Germany, the APS certificate.

Question 23

Do I need work experience for a Master's in Europe?

Accepted Answer

Not for most technical Master's programmes. It matters for MBA admission and for several fully funded scholarships such as DAAD EPOS and the Swedish Institute awards.

Question 24

Which scholarships are actually realistic to win?

Accepted Answer

Partial and income-linked ones: Charpak in France, Deutschlandstipendium in Germany, Invest Your Talent and regional DSU support in Italy. Fully funded awards are worth applying for but should not be your budget plan.

Question 25

Are there fully funded scholarships for Indian students?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's, DAAD EPOS, the Helmut-Schmidt-Programme and Swedish Institute awards. All are highly competitive and several require prior work experience.

Question 26

How do I find student accommodation before arriving?

Accepted Answer

Apply to university or state dorms as soon as you have admission, and treat a shared flat as your realistic starting point. Never pay a deposit without a viewing or a verifiable landlord.

Question 27

Is Europe safe for Indian students?

Accepted Answer

The major student cities are generally safe with functioning public services. Ordinary urban precautions apply. Registering with your local authority and your embassy after arrival is sensible.

Question 28

What is Ausbildung in Germany and who should consider it?

Accepted Answer

Ausbildung is paid dual vocational training combining classroom study with employment, typically for two to three and a half years in fields such as nursing, mechatronics and IT. It suits students who want to earn while training and do not need a degree. German at B1–B2 is normally required.

Question 29

Can I bring my spouse or family?

Accepted Answer

Dependent visas exist in most European countries but require additional financial proof and, in some cases, evidence of adequate accommodation. Rules vary considerably, so check the specific country's immigration site.

Question 30

Is a European degree recognised in India?

Accepted Answer

Degrees from accredited public universities are widely recognised by employers and, for further study, through the Association of Indian Universities equivalence process. Always verify that your institution is state-recognised before applying.
