France is the strongest option in Europe if your financial proof is the constraint rather than tuition. The required proof is roughly €7,400 against Germany's €11,900, and public university tuition stays under €4,000 a year even at the differentiated rate.

€2,770 per year (Bachelor's) and €3,770 per year (Master's) differentiated fees; many universities waive part of this

Overview

Why students choose France

  • Financial proof requirement is among the lowest in Western Europe.
  • CAF housing assistance can reduce rent by €100–€200 a month for eligible students.
  • Grandes écoles in business and engineering have genuinely strong global placement records.
  • A 12-month post-study permit for Master's graduates, plus a route back to France for five years after leaving.

Pros

  • Low public tuition combined with a low proof-of-funds threshold.
  • Government housing support that most students actually receive.
  • Strong presence in luxury, aerospace, energy, AI research and hospitality.

Trade-offs

  • Outside the grandes écoles, the number of English-taught programmes is smaller than in Germany or the Netherlands.
  • Administrative processes are slow and paperwork-heavy — expect delays with residence permits.
  • Paris rents distort the national picture; budget separately for Paris versus other cities.

Who should consider it

  • Students with limited liquid funds who still want a Western European degree.
  • Business, luxury management, aerospace, hospitality and AI applicants.
  • Students willing to learn French to at least A2 for daily life and internships.

Who may find it difficult

  • Students who want a fully English-speaking environment outside the classroom.
  • Students with no tolerance for administrative back-and-forth.

Education system

France runs two parallel systems. Public universities are open-access, inexpensive and research-oriented. Grandes écoles are selective, expensive and career-oriented, admitting through competitive entrance procedures. A degree from a well-ranked grande école carries more weight with recruiters than a general university Master's, which is why the fee gap exists.

Cities

Major student cities

Paris

Most programmes and internships, but rent commonly €700–€1,000 for a studio.

Lyon

Second-largest student city; strong in engineering and life sciences, notably cheaper than Paris.

Toulouse

Aerospace capital of Europe — Airbus and its supplier network.

Grenoble

Microelectronics, AI and computer science, with mountain-town living costs.

Admissions

Eligibility and application process

Campus France

Indian students apply through the Études en France platform. The pre-consular interview is part of the process, so prepare to explain your study plan clearly.

Academic eligibility

A three-year Indian Bachelor's is usually accepted for Master's entry, which makes France easier than Germany for many applicants.

Language

English-taught programmes ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5. French-taught programmes require DELF B2 or TCF equivalent.

Deadlines

The main Campus France cycle runs from October to March for the September intake. Applying in the last window sharply reduces your options.

Admission process

How do I apply to a French university from India?

Almost every application goes through Campus France Études en France first — you build one file there, get interviewed, and only then are your university choices forwarded.

  1. 1

Create your Études en France file

Register on the Campus France India portal between October and December for the September intake. The file holds your transcripts, CV, motivation letters and language certificates.

  2. 2

    Choose up to seven programmes

You may add up to seven wishes in one file. Mixing one or two reach schools with realistic public universities is the practical strategy — each wish needs its own motivation letter.

  3. 3

    Pass the Campus France interview

A counsellor interviews you about your study plan, funding and reasons for France. A weak or copied study plan is the most common reason a file stalls here.

  4. 4

Receive admission and accept one offer

Universities reply through the same portal between April and June. Accept one; that acceptance becomes part of your visa file.

  5. 5

Complete the visa and CVEC steps

Campus France issues the 'previous consular procedure' clearance, you book VFS, and you pay the CVEC student life contribution before enrolment.

What quietly costs students an intake in France

  • Applying directly to a university that requires the Campus France route — the file is not considered.
  • Reusing one generic motivation letter across all seven wishes.
  • Missing the December portal cut-off and losing the September intake entirely.

Visa

France student visa: the sequence

  1. 1

    Complete Études en France

Build the profile, apply to programmes, and attend the Campus France interview.

  2. 2

    Collect the acceptance

Once accepted, Campus France validates the file and forwards it to VFS.

  3. 3

    Apply for the VLS-TS

Submit financial proof, accommodation proof and insurance at the visa centre.

  4. 4

    Validate on arrival

The VLS-TS must be validated online within three months of arriving in France, or it becomes invalid.

Common mistakes we see

  • Skipping the online validation of the VLS-TS after arrival.
  • Weak answers at the Campus France interview about why this programme and this city.
  • Arranging accommodation proof too late to submit with the file.

Student life

Living there day to day

Accommodation

CROUS student residences are cheapest but limited. Private studios and colocations are common; CAF assistance applies to both.

Food and transport

CROUS canteens serve subsidised meals around €3.30. Under-26 transport passes are heavily discounted in most cities.

Working

964 hours a year is roughly 20 hours a week. Retail, hospitality and campus jobs are common; French helps considerably.

Careers

Work and life after graduation

Internships

Most Master's programmes include a four to six month paid internship (stage), which is the main route into a full-time role.

After graduation

Master's graduates can apply for the 12-month APS to look for work or start a business.

Sectors hiring

Aerospace, luxury and retail, energy, IT consulting and AI research.
