Writing an SOP for European Universities: Structure, Length and What to Cut

โ€œWhat should I actually write in my SOP for a European Master's?โ€

Evidence that you can pass their modules. Roughly 800โ€“1,000 words mapping your coursework and projects to that specific programme โ€” not a story about your childhood interest in the subject.

What they are checking

For most European Master's programmes, the committee is answering one question: does this applicant have the background to pass our modules? Your SOP should make that easy to verify. Childhood anecdotes and quotations do not help.

The exception is a funded or research-track programme. There the supervisor also reads for a research direction, so the SOP has to name a topic you could plausibly work on, not just the coursework you have covered.

A structure that works

Roughly 800โ€“1,000 words, in this order:

  • One paragraph on the specific area you want to work in and why
  • Two paragraphs mapping your coursework, projects and internships to the modules in this programme
  • One paragraph on why this university and this city โ€” name courses, labs or professors
  • One paragraph on what you intend to do after graduation, realistically
  • A short close, with no restatement of everything above

What to cut

Cut anything that would fit any programme in any country. Cut phrases like 'since childhood' and 'globalised world'. Cut claims you cannot evidence. If two sentences carry the same information, delete one. The committee reads hundreds of these, and specificity is the only thing that stands out.

Give yourself two weeks per application, not two evenings. Draft, leave it, cut a fifth of the words, then send it to someone who knows the field โ€” that is the sequence that produces the version worth submitting before the deadline.

The next decision

Pick one shortlisted programme, open its module list, and write the mapping paragraphs for it before you draft anything else.

If that is where you are stuck, read open the module list of a shortlisted programme, or check the eligibility bar you are writing against.

Questions students ask next

Should I write one SOP and reuse it?
Reuse your background paragraphs, never the fit paragraphs. The 'why this programme' section has to name real modules, labs or professors, and that is the part committees read closely.
Does a weak grade need explaining?
One sentence, factually, and only if the drop is visible in your transcript. Then move on to what you did afterwards.
