Admission guide

How Indian students get into medicine in France

French medicine runs through the PASS/LAS first-year route in French, applied for on Parcoursup or Études en France. There is no English-taught MBBS equivalent at public faculties.

Entrance test

PASS / LAS first-year selection

You enter a health-science first year and are selected for the medicine track on first-year results, written exams and an oral. Progression, not an entrance test, is the filter.

Language of instruction

French. B2 minimum, C1 realistic for clinical years.

Who is eligible

  • Class 12 with science subjects, assessed through Études en France
  • French at B2 (DELF/TCF), often tested at interview
  • Strong maths, physics, chemistry and biology grades
  • NEET qualification for the Indian licence route

Application sequence

  1. 01

Oct–Dec: open the Études en France file

Non-EU applicants from India apply through Campus France, not directly to the faculty.

  2. 02

Jan–Mar: Parcoursup wishes and Campus France interview

Rank PASS/LAS options; the interview checks motivation and French level.

  3. 03

    Apr–Jun: results and acceptance

Confirm one offer; multiple holds are not allowed past the deadline.

  4. 04

    Jun–Aug: VLS-TS student visa

Requires the acceptance letter, proof of about €615 a month in funds and accommodation evidence.

  5. 05

    Sep: enrolment and CVEC payment

Pay the CVEC student life contribution before enrolment closes.

Documents to prepare

  • Class 10 and 12 marksheets with French translations
  • DELF/TCF French certificate
  • Campus France acceptance and Parcoursup confirmation
  • Proof of funds, accommodation and health cover

What it costs (estimate)

Public tuition is roughly €3,770 a year for non-EU students under the differentiated fee, with waivers common at some faculties. Living costs €800–€1,300, Paris higher.

Licensing and practising

The French diplôme d'État permits EU practice after the internat. India recognises it when duration and internship rules are met, followed by FMGE/NExT.

Where applications go wrong

  • Expecting an English-taught route at a public faculty
  • Underestimating first-year attrition in PASS
  • Missing the CVEC payment and delaying enrolment

True for every European medical route

  • NEET qualification is required if you ever intend to practise in India — the score does not decide European admission, but without it your Indian licence route is closed.
  • Medical degrees in Europe are 5.5–6 years and are legally titled MD/MBChB/Laurea Magistrale; India recognises them as equivalent to MBBS when the course is at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same country.
  • Clinical years are taught in the local language almost everywhere, even on English-track programmes. Plan for B1–B2 in the local language by year three.
  • Transfers between European medical schools mid-course are rare and usually cost a year. Choose the country you can finish in.
