Admission process

What changes between Flemish and French-speaking Belgium?

Admission is university by university, and the region decides the language, the equivalence procedure and the deadline — Flanders and Wallonia are effectively two systems.

  1. 1

    Pick your region first

KU Leuven and Ghent (Flanders) teach in Dutch at Bachelor's with wide English Master's; ULB and UCLouvain (Wallonia/Brussels) teach mostly in French.

  2. 2

Apply for equivalence of your diploma

French-speaking Belgium requires an équivalence decision from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, with a mid-July cut-off; Flanders handles recognition through NARIC Vlaanderen.

  3. 3

    Apply to the university

Master's applications open around October–November, with non-EU deadlines commonly between 1 March and 1 June depending on the programme.

  4. 4

    Prove language level

IELTS 6.5 for English-taught, French B2 (often DELF) or Dutch B2 (ITNA) for local-language programmes.

  5. 5

Apply for the type D visa

Show the admission letter, roughly €830 per month of funds, medical certificate and police clearance — Belgian files are document-heavy.

What quietly costs students an intake in Belgium

  • Missing the separate équivalence deadline, which is earlier than the admission deadline.
  • Assuming a Brussels programme is in English because the city is bilingual.
