Admission guide

How Indian students get into medicine in Austria

Austrian medicine is German-taught and allocated by the MedAT entrance test, with a fixed 5% quota for non-EU applicants at each public medical university.

Entrance test

MedAT-H (human medicine)

A single day of testing in German covering basic natural sciences, cognitive skills, text comprehension and social-emotional competence. Held in early July, results in August. Only rank matters.

Language of instruction

German. The MedAT itself is in German, so C1 is effectively a prerequisite.

Who is eligible

  • Class 12 recognised as a general university entrance qualification
  • C1 German
  • MedAT-H rank inside the 5% non-EU quota
  • NEET qualification for the Indian licence route

Application sequence

  1. 01

    Mar: MedAT registration window

Registration and the test fee close in mid-March — there is no late entry.

  2. 02

    Apr–Jun: prepare in German

The BMS science section and cognitive subtests both need German-language practice.

  3. 03

    Early July: sit the MedAT

One test day, one attempt per year.

  4. 04

    Aug: results and admission

Ranked lists per university; non-EU seats fill from the top of the quota.

  5. 05

    Aug–Sep: residence permit

Apply for the student residence permit with the admission letter, funds and insurance; processing can take weeks.

Documents to prepare

  • Class 10 and 12 certificates with certified German translations
  • C1 German certificate
  • MedAT result notification
  • Proof of funds, accommodation and insurance for the residence permit

What it costs (estimate)

Non-EU tuition at public medical universities is about €1,500 per semester plus the student union fee. Living costs €950–€1,250 a month, Vienna at the top of that range.

Licensing and practising

The Austrian Diplomstudium plus Basisausbildung leads to EU practice rights. For India, the course meets duration rules; FMGE/NExT still applies.

Where applications go wrong

  • Preparing for MedAT in English
  • Missing the March registration window
  • Ignoring how small the 5% non-EU quota really is

True for every European medical route

  • NEET qualification is required if you ever intend to practise in India — the score does not decide European admission, but without it your Indian licence route is closed.
  • Medical degrees in Europe are 5.5–6 years and are legally titled MD/MBChB/Laurea Magistrale; India recognises them as equivalent to MBBS when the course is at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same country.
  • Clinical years are taught in the local language almost everywhere, even on English-track programmes. Plan for B1–B2 in the local language by year three.
  • Transfers between European medical schools mid-course are rare and usually cost a year. Choose the country you can finish in.
