Admission guide
How Indian students get into medicine in Germany
German medicine is taught in German and allocated through Hochschulstart, not through an English-language entrance test. Most Indian students need a Studienkolleg year plus C1 German before they can compete.
Entrance test
TMS (Test für Medizinische Studiengänge)
Optional but decisive: a strong TMS result improves your rank in the university-specific quota (AdH). International applicants usually compete in a small non-EU quota administered by uni-assist or the university itself.
Language of instruction
German throughout. C1 (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4) is the practical entry level.
Who is eligible
- Class 12 recognised as equivalent, usually after a Studienkolleg M-course and the Feststellungsprüfung
- C1 German (DSH-2 / TestDaF 4x4)
- Competitive Abitur-equivalent grade average, plus TMS where the university weighs it
- NEET qualification for the Indian licence route
Application sequence
- 01
18 months out: German to B2/C1
This is the real bottleneck. Nothing else in the process moves until the language certificate exists.
- 02
Year 1: Studienkolleg M-course
Apply via uni-assist; pass the Feststellungsprüfung to convert your Class 12 into a recognised entry qualification.
- 03
Jan–Mar: register for TMS
One attempt per lifetime in most cycles — sit it only when prepared.
- 04
By 15 July: apply through Hochschulstart / uni-assist
Winter-semester deadline. Rank universities carefully; the quota is small.
- 05
Aug–Sep: blocked account and visa
Open the blocked account for the current annual requirement, then book the visa appointment as soon as the admission letter arrives.
Documents to prepare
- Class 10 and 12 certificates with certified translations
- Feststellungsprüfung or recognised Studienkolleg certificate
- German language certificate (DSH-2 / TestDaF)
- TMS score report where required
- Blocked account confirmation and health insurance
What it costs (estimate)
Public medical faculties charge no tuition, only a semester contribution of roughly €150–€350. Budget €950–€1,200 a month for living costs and the blocked-account requirement.
Licensing and practising
You finish with the Staatsexamen and Approbation for EU practice. For India, the German course plus practical year meets the duration rule, then FMGE/NExT applies.
Where applications go wrong
- Applying to medicine before the language certificate exists
- Treating Studienkolleg as optional — most Indian Class 12 profiles need it
- Using the TMS attempt too early
True for every European medical route
- NEET qualification is required if you ever intend to practise in India — the score does not decide European admission, but without it your Indian licence route is closed.
- Medical degrees in Europe are 5.5–6 years and are legally titled MD/MBChB/Laurea Magistrale; India recognises them as equivalent to MBBS when the course is at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same country.
- Clinical years are taught in the local language almost everywhere, even on English-track programmes. Plan for B1–B2 in the local language by year three.
- Transfers between European medical schools mid-course are rare and usually cost a year. Choose the country you can finish in.
