Admission guide
How Indian students get into medicine in Ireland
Ireland offers genuinely English-taught medicine to non-EU students, applied for directly or through agents rather than the CAO, with HPAT or MCAT depending on entry route. It is the most expensive option in this list.
Entrance test
HPAT-Ireland (undergraduate) or MCAT/GAMSAT (graduate entry)
Undergraduate entry combines Class 12 results with HPAT. Graduate-entry medicine, a four-year route for existing degree holders, uses GAMSAT or MCAT instead.
Language of instruction
English throughout, including clinical rotations.
Who is eligible
- Class 12 with chemistry plus one other science, high aggregate
- HPAT-Ireland for undergraduate entry, or a Bachelor's degree plus GAMSAT/MCAT for graduate entry
- English proficiency (IELTS 6.5–7.0 typical)
- NEET qualification for the Indian licence route
Application sequence
- 01
Sep–Nov: shortlist and register for HPAT
Non-EU applicants apply directly to each medical school; HPAT registration closes in January.
- 02
Jan–Feb: sit HPAT
Score is valid for that admission cycle only.
- 03
Feb–May: offers
Non-EU offers are made on a rolling basis and often require a substantial deposit within weeks.
- 04
Jun–Jul: study visa
Requires the offer, fee receipt, private health insurance and evidence of about €10,000 in living funds.
- 05
Sep: enrolment and IRP registration
Register with immigration after arrival for the residence permission card.
Documents to prepare
- Class 10 and 12 marksheets and certificates
- HPAT or GAMSAT/MCAT score report
- IELTS/TOEFL certificate
- Offer letter, fee receipt and private medical insurance
- Proof of living funds for the visa
What it costs (estimate)
Non-EU medical tuition is typically €45,000–€60,000 a year, plus €1,100–€1,500 a month living costs. Budget the full multi-year commitment before accepting a place.
Licensing and practising
Graduates complete internship year and register with the Medical Council for Irish/EU practice. The degree is recognised in India subject to FMGE/NExT.
Where applications go wrong
- Applying through the CAO as a non-EU student
- Accepting an offer without a plan for six years of fees
- Leaving HPAT registration until after the January close
True for every European medical route
- NEET qualification is required if you ever intend to practise in India — the score does not decide European admission, but without it your Indian licence route is closed.
- Medical degrees in Europe are 5.5–6 years and are legally titled MD/MBChB/Laurea Magistrale; India recognises them as equivalent to MBBS when the course is at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same country.
- Clinical years are taught in the local language almost everywhere, even on English-track programmes. Plan for B1–B2 in the local language by year three.
- Transfers between European medical schools mid-course are rare and usually cost a year. Choose the country you can finish in.
