IMAT Cut-Offs: How Your University Ranking Decides the Score You Need

โ€œWhat IMAT score do I need to get a medicine seat in Italy?โ€

It depends entirely on which universities you rank. Non-EU cut-offs have recently ranged from the high 20s at smaller southern universities to the mid-40s at Pavia, Milan and Bologna. Ranking one realistic university above your dream university is often worth more than five extra marks.

Why one score means different things at different universities

The IMAT is a single national test, but seats are allocated per university and per candidate category. Each medical school gets a fixed number of non-EU seats โ€” sometimes ten, sometimes fifty โ€” and ranks only the candidates who put it in their preference list. The lowest score that still gets a seat becomes that year's cut-off. Nobody sets it in advance.

That is why the question 'what score do I need' has no single answer. A 32 can be comfortably above the line at one university and eight marks short at another in the same year.

What moves a cut-off year to year

Cut-offs move for reasons outside your control, which is exactly why you should not plan around a single number:

  • Seat count: a university that adds ten non-EU seats usually sees its cut-off fall
  • Paper difficulty: a harder logic section pulls the whole distribution down
  • Reputation effects: rankings and word of mouth crowd applicants into the same few cities
  • Scrolling: unfilled seats move down the ranking in rounds, so the final effective cut-off is often lower than the first published one

How to build a ranking that survives a bad test day

Treat the preference list as a portfolio, not a wishlist. Put one or two universities you would love but might miss at the top, then two whose recent cut-offs sit at or just below your mock-test average, then one clear safety option with a historically low cut-off and a decent number of non-EU seats.

The exception worth knowing: if you genuinely will not move to a smaller city, do not list it as a safety. Students who accept a seat they never intended to take and then withdraw lose the year entirely, because the scrolling rounds have already closed.

Preparation, in the order that pays

Score gains come unevenly across the paper. Biology and chemistry are the most learnable and carry heavy weight; logic and general knowledge reward timed practice more than content revision; physics and maths are worth securing only after the biology base is solid.

Practically: work through past papers under a 100-minute clock from the start, because the time pressure โ€” 60 questions with negative marking for wrong answers โ€” is what separates a 30 from a 40 more often than knowledge gaps. Leaving a question blank costs nothing; guessing costs you.

The next decision

Before you finalise the Universitaly ranking, list the non-EU cut-off each of your chosen universities published last year and sort your list so that at least two are below your realistic score band.

If that is where you are stuck, read the full IMAT application sequence and document timeline, or what six years of Italian medicine costs by city.

Questions students ask next

Is there negative marking in the IMAT?
Yes. Correct answers score 1.5, wrong answers lose 0.4, and unanswered questions score zero. That makes disciplined skipping a real scoring strategy, not a sign of weakness.
Can I change my university ranking after the test?
No. The preference order is locked when Universitaly pre-enrolment closes, before results. This is precisely why the ranking has to be built around your realistic score band rather than your hopes.
